DOG RESCUE: "PALADIN"

YOGI AND BLACKIE

Rescuing pups has become a family affair this year.

Our Daughter has  "Blackie", a Flat Coat Retriever who is getting up in years.  You can tell by his white muzzle he is not a young dog. Blackie was a rescued dog, at 2 years old.

Now there is "YOGI" in their lives.  Yogi is a "Bahamian Pot Cake".  Pot  Cakes are indigenous dogs in the Bahamas.  They acquired him December 27, 2013.  He's about 14 months old in the picture.  He had been battling mange. He is a totally different dog now. Healthy, happy and now house trained. He had obviously been abused by a man. He becomes very anxious when the sun goes down.

Things were so bad they almost gave him up...They're glad they didn't, The patience and training they gave him paid off, in the love and loyalty they are getting from him. Everyday something happens which reminds them that some horrible person tried to break him.  He is very protective of his family including their cat Scoobie and little dog "Pediddles".  He doesn't know how to communicate his growls are him talking and people miss-read him.
Blackie doesn't have his full coat on.  They live in Florida and he has skin  problems.  During the summer months he gets a "trim".

WOLFIE
Our Navy son and his family rescued "Wolfie", Australian Sheppard cross.  They got him April 11, 2014.  I visited over 4th of July holiday.  I don't see Australian shepherd.  I see an Australian Cattle dog.  He is super intelligent.  He's very protective of his family.

I received the following correspondence from my sister.  Their older yellow lab passed away January 18, 2014.  From the following note I see she missed hearing the clicking of toenails on the hardwood floors. (We have cats, but when our dog passed last year one of the things I missed the most was the sounds of a dog in the house.)

Dear Family,
Thought you might enjoy hearing about the events of the past 15 hours!   We rescued a yellow lab from a kill shelter.  He's awesome, but has a few skin problems.  He's a very typical loving lab.  We named him Paladin, after the star actor of "Have Gun Will Travel".   Richard Boon was Paladin on the TV show from 1957-1963.

Email sent to the lab rescue:

What an adventure!!  The pup won our hearts. He is sweet, incredibly smart, listens fairly well, and is acting like this has always been his home.  He's beside me as I type this.  Which I have to say isn't something new.  He has been following us around and wants continuous affection!  We almost thought "Shadow" would be a better name. That is, until this morning.....

Last night was a bad night.  The weather; thunder, lightning and pouring rain!  Any Lab would be upset.  I put Paladin on the landing with a blanket and said goodnight. I couldn't sleep I was so worried.  Amazingly he rested quietly and I fell asleep on the couch.

The weather got crazy around 3, I listened, there was No sound from Pal.  Soon I heard vomiting. I went down. What a mess, but it looked normal, and didn't smell.  I reasoned too much excitement from the day. I cleaned, comforted and stroked him.  There was no shaking or typical nervous behavior.  I never did get back to sleep. I had to clean up 2 more times.  After the last time I took him out on the leash in the side yard.  He was fine!  I fed him at about six, gave him his meds and let him hang out with us in the kitchen. A while later I let him out in the fenced area on his own. HE MADE A POOPIE! HOORAY!

I praised him when he smelled his accomplishment!  I cleaned it up and went to the gate to put it in the garbage, carefully opening the gate with a "stay" command and closed it behind me.

Upon reentering he slipped out.  There he goes!  It's off to the races!  I'm chasing him in my nightgown and slip-on shoes, with my headscarf flying!  What a sight!  It doesn't help that I'm screaming "Paladin!!!" "Come here, Paladin!"  He doesn't even know his new name!  It's a game now!  In and out of back yards, me diving for him, and missing of course!  I'm uttering a heartfelt prayer, "Please, let me catch him, and DONT LET ANYONE SEE ME!!!!  By this time I knew why he ended up at the pound!  Who knows how many people he escaped from? How many grabs at his collar?  (Its probably why he didn't have one.)   But, if he gets away, at least the vet micro-chipped him.  I am almost 60, no match for a youthful lab, running back and forth, and up and down the alley.

Then a miracle happened.  Prayer answered, embarrassment faded, as a car approached from behind!  Thank G-d it's a nice young lady!  I see Paladin circling the car.  Here's my chance.  Taking advantage of his friendly and curious nature, I signal for her to roll down her window and call him,  "Here, boy!" she calls.  He approaches the window on  the side where I am standing...a quick grab for the collar, GOTCHA!  "Thank you, thank you! I called out to her,  We just rescued him yesterday, he doesn't know his name."

Walking, winded and exasperated back to the house, I started laughing (instead of crying!) I thought how incredibly funny it would be if someone video taped our chase and put it to music on You Tube!  I'm thinking, viral!

You gotta love him!  He's really a sweetie. I hope his time-out in the 'dog-house' did him some good, but I doubt it!   Paladin is his name, He definitely earned it today.  I've penned a new version of the theme song to Paladin.
PALADIN

Paladin
 “Have Legs will Travel”,
reads the card of a lab.

A knight without armor in a savage land.

 His fast legs for hire,
heed the call of the wind.

A dog of good fortune is a lab called, “Paladin”.

Paladin, Paladin where do you roam?
Paladin, Paladin far, far from home!!!

For those of you who have never seen the show.  This is a parody of the theme song to the black and white western.  Here is a YouTube rendition of the song:

Yes, my husband and I eagerly awaited the weekly show.  At that time there was no such thing as pre-recording and watching at your leisure.  You arranged your life around your "must watch" shows.
