PIT BULLS, SUNNY SIDE UP

I want so much to have a moment in the sun with you.  Will you share your sunbeam with me?   You are so asleep you don't hear me talking to you.  You don't even feel me nudging you over so I can get a teeny bit of sun. Please scootch over a little bit.  If you won't move I see a solution.  It won't let me cuddle with you but I can at least soak up some sun.  It feels so good.

A PITBULL PUPPY'S PORTRAIT

If you haven't read about me before, I am Meydel.  That's yiddush for little girl.  I'm Boychik's baby sister.  Boychik is yiddish for little boy.  He's not so little though.  He weighs about 90 pounds.   He's been around for almost a  year.  You can read about some of his exploits in the other blogs.

This week I have been in my forever home for three months.  We are still going through lots of "Situations".

The biggest one, I seem to have come to my new home with separation anxiety.  If they walk out of the room and come back in I have to greet them as if they have been gone for days.  I jump on them and snibble on them.  I don't have a soft mouth so the snibbling hurts sometimes.

They have to hold my collar and distract me to get me to calm down.  Then I let them pet me and love me.  They say to each other, "When we google, how to break this habit, there has been no answer for us."

I have learned how to tell Mommy I have to go, but I don't tell her till after I have gone.  I run up to her and bark, she looks at me and says, "Oh no, again.  You were just out 10 minutes ago."  Then we clean up the mess.  I am good about going when she lets me out, but I leave it up to her to decide it is time to go.  When they let me out I go potty when they ask me to, even if I have just gone .  I know what to do and when to do it but when I am playing I just go where I am at.

I can hold it through the night, so that is not my problem.  Mommy has a secret.  She picks up the water bowl at 9:00 PM and doesn't put it down till I've been potty the next morning.
I do have a couple of pluses.  I am a superb watch dog.   I sound the alarm even when it's a B & E on a television program.  When I watch TV,  I think it is something happening in another room.

Today when Dad was viewing the pictures he took of me on his 32" X 18" monitor I looked up, saw myself, and started barking at the Doggy in the window.

Another plus I have, is I am a tattle-tale.  When Boychik is doing something he shouldn't I have a shrill bark that brings Mommy running.  I use that same bark to tell her when he takes my toys and won't let me play with them.

I love to cuddle and they love to cuddle me.  It's when I get rambunctious they get perturbed.  I can't just sit on the couch and be petted.  I want to rough-house.  I want them to let me bite them like I do Boych.  Boych lets me pull him by his jowls and never complains.

They were spoiled by Boych.  When he relaxes he crashes.  He's out like a light in seconds.  We've seen him fall asleep with his head up and it drops like a boulder to the floor with a loud heavy thunk.

I'm through the teething stage (I think).  They didn't appreciate when I showed them I liked to chew.  I tried the corners of the coffee table when they weren't around.  They were good but not as good as the newel on the arm of the sofa.  After I got reprimanded for those things and decided I better stick to the logs they give me.  I've only chewed one tennis shoe, one slipper, one dress shoe, and one everyday shoe.  All but one were put up where I supposedly couldn't get them.   I decided it wasn't worth getting in trouble for, so I have stopped doing it.  They still don't trust me with the shoes.

One of my favorite things they give me to chew is a black walnut.  I don't have it long though.  Boych chews his up lickity split and then comes to steal mine.  I yell for Mommy and she retrieves it and the minute she turns her back he takes it again.

Today it snowed.  There is enough snow I can play snow plow with my nose.  I really have fun biting at the chunks of snow which pop up. I am really a tomboy at heart.  I'll be a little lady soon enough.

AND SO SHE GROWS (our pitbull puppy)

DECEMBER 20, 2014

DECEMBER 27, 2014
I haven't had two seconds to write about the pros and cons of having two Pitbulls. The last two months have been so full of day to day goings on.  I thought maybe you would like to see how they are still the best of buddies and how she has grown.

The blog's home page picture was taken the night Meydel came to us.  It was taken eight hours after she arrived.

We are having potty training issues.  I am the one that is trained.  She will not tell us but she will go when we ask her too.  Most of the time she holds it through the night, so I know she can control it.

She has just begun to teethe and we have to catch her chewing to stop her.  (She does have plenty of chew toys).  Her favorite chewing toy is a black walnut.  She plays hockey with it and when tired, she lays down and chews on it. The only problem is she has to keep it away from the iron jaws of Boychik.  He demolishes them in about 5 minutes.

Meydel is quite the watch dog.  Boychik would watch you come in and go out and not say a thing.  Meydel will announce you're here before you know you are here.

The other thing we are working on is she is starting to cabinet surf.  That is a huge no no in our house.

They have only been outside together once.  We can't trust her to come when we call and when they are wrestling we can't trust Boychik to listen to us.  They both get too carried away.  We have a big deck which they go outside on and run and wrestle and play tug of war with their toys. (They do it in the house too but not as ferociously.)

Most of the time we are thoroughly enjoying being PitBull Parents.

RESCUE A PIT BULL

30 seconds after meeting 1:38 PM
Our first pit bull was a rescued pit bull.  We rescued him from our front gate. Reading this blog is his story.  This blog site was set up for him, to record his story.  To let the world know, to own a pit bull is not any worse than owning a German Shepard, Rottweiler, or any other large dog.

Why have we been thinking of another dog?  The last try was disastrous for us and Boychik.   The positive side to the negative experience was, we saw how much Boychik needed a companion.  How much he enjoyed having someone he could communicate with.  Boychik has been lonesome for a friend.  The cats won't let him cuddle up with them or even smell them.  He is very animal oriented.  He wants our parrots to be friends with him and it frustrates him to see them in the cage.

1:39 PM
He gets plenty of loving and cuddling from us but he needs someone on his level who can romp and run with him.  He misses the game of it.

Good things come in small packages.  On November 20, 2014 we welcomed a new family member into our home.  We adopted a puppy from "Stray Rescue of St. Louis".  On Thursday November 11, 2014 we emailed our application into Stray Rescue.  The  website said notification within 48 hours.

1:39 PM
On November 14 I wrote this blog article announcing our intentions.

The day came and went and we still had not been contacted.  We agonized through the next several days.  We kept checking her page.  We were worried someone beat us to the punch and adopted her.  We were hoping to be called and we could take Boychik to her foster home to "meet and greet".  The rescue center doesn't work that way.

Monday morning came, Hunny called the shelter and asked if they had received our application.  The receptionist told us yes but it
hadn't been reviewed yet.  We took it to mean someone else  was
considered for her forever home.  By Monday evening we figured
1:39 PM
we should look elsewhere.   It was to be a very busy week for me.  I knew Wednesday was filled with guild meeting and errands.  I was glad we didn't have a new puppy who would feel she would be deserted by us.
Wednesday came and I went to guild.  The meeting place is a large all metal building.  I had never thought about it before but there was no cell phone reception in there.  When I got back in the car I called my Hunny and he said, "I've been hoping you'd call.  Stray rescue called.  In order for them to do the home study
all animals need to have current vaccinations."
1 hour later 2:43 PM

They would bring the dog to us on Thursday for a "meet and greet" . If the meeting was a success they would leave her for a 5 day home trial.  We would have the option to return her no questions asked if it didn't work out.

We spent the afternoon running 7 Cats to the Vet and "puppy proofing" the house.  The Lady would be delivering her after she got off work.

Puppy arrived at 1:30 PM.  From the pictures on the left, you can see the meet and greet  was a success.
2:49 PM
7:49 PM NOV. 20

She is very quiet for two seconds.  Only because she wore Boychik out and he is collapsed on the floor in front of her.

As you can see below.  He is totally out of it.

It has been seven and a half hours and we have had a ruckus in the old house tonight.  It has been delightful.

If you're looking for a new friend please don't forget to look at the forgotten dogs.

Maybe rescuing a Pit Bull is in your future.

BTW, Her name is "Meydel".

PIT BULLS NEED FRIENDS

I just realized it was 3 months yesterday since I have posted. So much has happened in that time.  Boychik did not stop presenting us with reasons to wonder why pit bulls have such a bad reputation.  I just didn't have time to write about them.

I will say, with his size, he can knock you over by bumping you when he walks by.  We had to make a trip to the vet yesterday and he weighed 83.5 pounds.  He is a mass of tightly bound muscle.   Which is the reason for the vet trip.  We have an extremely steep hill behind our house.  He charges up and down it chasing squirrels and falling leaves.

He was limping terribly, not putting weight on the foot.  It was off to the vet to find out he has broken the foot on the outside edge where the toe attaches and there isn't a thing we can do about it but give him an anti inflammatory.

The last two articles I wrote were about the New Dog Shayna.  It is the first dog we have ever had to return.  We worked for 6 weeks trying to socialize her and teach her to be a house dog.  She was totally incorrigible.  If you were watching she obeyed; if you weren't, she did whatever she wanted to.
There were a couple of last straws.  Keep in mind, she and Boych had the best time when they were playing by her rules.  She began attacking him if we were around.  He wouldn't fight back.  He wasn't afraid of her, he just didn't want to fight.  When he did fight back she became more aggressive.  She started claiming us as her own property and wouldn't let him near us.

The two last straws happened within 24 hours.  They were let outside to potty and play (their play became extremely rough for inside play).  Thirty minutes later I went and called them because no one had knocked on the door to come in.  No one answered the call.  Two hours went by and Boychik came home wet and muddy to his knees.  There was no Shayna.  I called and called and went out and blew the car horn (we have 20 acres of woods), sometimes the sound doesn't carry well and the car horn sound does.  The dogs think someone is here and come running.  Still no Shayna.  I am getting worried and Boychik is pacing back and forth and looking out the door for her.  He was worried to.

Three hours went by and no Shayna.  The phone rings and it's the vets office.  They said, "Are you missing a dog?"  I said, "Yes, how did you know?  I've been calling and calling and she hasn't returned"  They said, "We have her here at the office."  I said, "How in the world did she get there.  That is over 7 miles away".

They proceeded to tell me a couple was there with her and they had found her in their garage.  They had to give her a bath before they could put her in the car.  She had been in sewer mud.  She had her rabies tag on and they took her to vet.  The people live over the hill from us.   It is about a mile as the crow flies.   Doc said they'd bring her out to the gas station where our two roads meet.

I retrieved her from them and we got home.  I realized I would not be able to let the dogs outside together any more because she would lead him off again,  so it was musical dogs all day.  The next morning was Saturday.  We were fixing a late breakfast, technically it was lunch.  We were discussing how we were going to train her to stay home.  Boychik walked up (he always likes to watch me cook and just wants to be close to me.)  He doesn't beg he just wants to be where we are.

Out of the Corner of my eye I see Shayna walking over.  No problem we have a big kitchen with lots of room for dogs to be there.  She gets beside Boychick and it was like a lion was in for the kill.  She grabbed his ear with growling that was not play growls.  He was yelping and then she went for his throat.  There was no way she was stopping I grabbed the leash and decided it was grab her and risk getting bit because she was trying to kill Boychik.

She did not try to bite me but she was still trying to get him.  He stopped fighting back the minute we pulled her off him, but she wouldn't stop trying to tear into him.  I threw her out side.  I figured she would calm down and then we could let her back in.

Ten minutes later I let her in and she ran to look for Boych and started attacking him.  We put him in the den and left her out in the living room and called the Vet and told him what happened.  He had told us when he gave her to us that if it didn't work out we could bring her back.

The trip to the Vets was very hard.  I had fallen in love with her and was so upset that I hadn't been able to fix her.  When we put her in his kennel she knew she was being left, she did everything she could to get out of the kennel.  He had to give her a tranquilizer shot to calm her down.

When we returned without her, Boych was looking all over for her.  For over a week, when he went outside he looked down the drive to see if she was returning.  He has tried to make friends with our multitude of cats.  Two of them will let him get within an inch of them but if he tries to sniff them they run away, leaving him standing there.  Yes, he stands there and watches them go, he whines and whimpers.  He has never tried to chase them.  He has even tried to befriend the Parrots which is another shaggy dog story needing a blog article of its own.

Now back to the objective of this blog, a friend for Boychik.  As you can see in the above picture we have resorted to stuffed animals.   He adores them.  We have to cut out the eyes and then he un-stuffs them.  He carries the empty bodies around.  He takes them to bed with him.  Sometimes they get a little chewed.  But he doesn't want us to throw away the pieces he tears them into.  He keeps all his babies in a pile when he isn't playing with them.

We have decided we need to find a real friend for Boych.
Yesterday we put in an application for a puppy we found at:

We called and they said it might be 48 hours before we hear anything.  If we are accepted, then we will take Boychik and us for a "meet and greet".....to see if it is a possible fit.  If this puppy doesn't work out, you can see there is quite a list of friends who need homes.

This is a possible new family member.

If you're looking for a new friend please don't forget to look at the forgotten dogs.

PIT BULL VS GREAT PYRANEES

This blog will be a long one.....Just as our week with the two new "friends" seemed like it was a month not a week.  It was a week of, who's to be the contender to the throne.  From Sunday, August 3, till Sunday August 10, we were inundated with every spectrum of what a dog should not do in your home.

It was evident Shayna had never been in a house or never been on a lead.  I'm trying to remember back to the 3rd.  I wish I had had time to make notes when things happened.  It was a whirl wind week of getting to know you.  From the moment we woke till when we went to bed, it was watch and don't leave anything unattended.  To her everything was hers.

The first thing we noticed she had this self-preservation idea to the max.  We were told she was shy,  this wasn't the case.  She's extremely territorial.  She will fight for what she thinks is hers.

Example:  The third day she was here we got the "cage" out of the barn and put it up in the living room.  There were a couple of things we needed to address;  potty training and aggression.  We tried to get her into the cage.  It was shove her in and shut the door.  Then we gave her a treat and told her she was a good girl. (This is how we did it with boychik, with in 10 minutes he went in an out of the cage thinking treats were there.)  Shayna went bonkers.  She wanted nothing to do with treats.  She tore at the walls and wouldn't calm down.  We let her out.

Remember this was Boychik's cage first, till he didn't use it any more, and didn't need it for training, so it was put away.  Boychik was looking at the cage with it's door open and you could see him thinking, "I remember this."  then he goes in.  Shayna took off like a Tasmanian devil, ran into the cage pinning him in the back, tearing at his face.  Thank goodness she had a strong collar on.

I was afraid to reach in and grab because Boych was defending himself, but she had the upper hand and he had no place to go.  He did not want to fight her, and was only defending himself against her bites.  I pulled her out and she is flinging herself at the cage trying to get back in and finish him.  I kicked the door shut and released her.  She didn't back off she started crashing the sides of the cage from the outside.  I had a warrior princess on my hands and she was determined to put the gallant prince in his grave.

I grabbed her collar and moved her away, kicking the door back open so he would have a chance to get out of the cage.  She is still growling and charging at him, and pulling me.  To her credit she never showed any aggression towards me.  If she had it would have been a deal breaker.  She would have been at the vets in the time it would take me to grab the keys and the purse.

I had to hold on to the collar for almost thirty minutes.  Every time Boych moved she began the terror campaign.  The problem was the "Cage".  She didn't want it, but because she had been in it he wasn't to go in it.  It was hers.  If he walked near it he was attacked.  The cage is still up and we have still tried with no success to use it for her.  There have been numerous times when I wanted to cage her for the rest of her life.

One of the biggest obstacles we had was to get her to recognize the human voice, that it was speaking to her.  We actually thought she was deaf.  The morning before the cage incident we realized she wasn't deaf.  We were outside trying to get the potty training idea implanted in her brain.  Boych had already run off to his potty corner and I was leading her around on the lead (actually following her. She didn't want to lead, but the chain could be on her if I just let her walk.  She was on the lead because we didn't want her running away and didn't want her to lead Boych off.  (He followed her everywhere in the house, we were worried the same thing would happen outside).

He was out of sight and barked (The raccoons were on the back porch).   Her ears went up, it was then I knew she was just deaf to the sound of voices.  She had never been spoken too.

Now to the potty training.  Geesh was that dog clueless.  I can't tell you how big the rivers were.  It is great we don't have carpet.  (She wet on the large carpet squares Boych used for sleeping on.)  Her wetting and pooing was not marking her territory it was just needing to go.  She did not even give signal she was going to go, she just went where she was standing.

We had had success going outside a couple of times, but on the lead she would never poo.  The last straw came, when she wanted to go and I thought I saw the look and went to get the lead.  Bad move, I should have just gone to get her and put her out.  She jumped up on the sofa to get away from Boych sniffing her and peed and peed and peed.  I yelled and yelled and yelled.  It wasn't the disaster you think it was.  The sofa has been covered with drop cloth plastic when people aren't using it.  It also has a cover on top of that.  The reason for the cover is not to keep fur off it, it is because the cats were having fur balls to the extreme and it seemed they preferred to cough them up on the sofa.  Washing fur balls off a cover is easier than washing the stain out of it. not to mention what that gallon of urine would have done.

I took her out saying Potty, and took her to the places where we had had success.  No luck but I was hoping she understood.   We went back in and I cleaned up the mess.  Afterwards, I am sitting here at the computer working on my Guilds BOM/Mystery.  It hadn't been even an hour since the "accident".  I hear toenails on the floor, and the crinkle of the drop cloth on the sofa and turn around to look to see why and what do I see?  The "D" Dog on the sofa peeing.  I didn't think twice I grabbed her by the collar and drug her still peeing to the door and threw her out, yelling, "If you want to run away, do it, I won't stop you.  Go potty outside."

I went to clean up the sofa.  Washing covers for the sofa is no easy task.  It is ten feet long.  Went and got the other cover out of the wash and put this one in the wash.  When I came back upstairs I went to the door and looked out.  She was still there.  That was the first success on two levels.  She didn't run away and what I didn't know was I got through to her pea brain that you don't go in the house.

Then disaster, she developed some kind of intestinal track infection.  She didn't know when she had to poo.  It just started happening.  I thought it was just something she ate.  48 hours later I called the vet and he gave me thirteen dollars of meds for her; some kind of antibiotic I had never heard of and a tube of tape worm medicine and said to get some pepto bismol.  (Did you know you can get a small bottle of off-brand called "pink bismuth" at the dollar tree?)  She is finally better.

During the day time she has been accident free after intestinal was better, but she still couldn't make it through the night.  Last night was the first night we have been totally accident free for 12 hours.  I'm keeping my finger crossed.  Our only problem is she won't tell us when she needs to go, but neither does Boych.  He just holds it till I let him out.

Back to the aggressive moves.  The first aggression happened the first day she was here.  She decided to look at the parrots.  Whoops!  It didn't occur to us Boych would consider them his.  He decided to protect them from her looking at them.  He got between her and the cage and barked.  She decided she wanted where he was, and she charged, This was the first time Warrior Princess was unveiled.  We literally had a royal dog fight on our hands.   Boych was a true prince.  When I hollered and said, "No Boychik", he stopped defending his territory immediately...I had to pull her off and hold her to keep her from attacking him.
 Zephyr and Mariah kissing hello
We have had numerous episodes of Boych protecting his parrots.  She doesn't even go near the cages now.  Due to these confrontations another strange relationship has developed.  The parrot whose name is "Zephyr" has started calling Boych, "come here, come here".  When Boych shows up he says "Woof, woof, puppy dog"  Then he growls at Boych.  When he starts the growling, Boych starts growling and barking very loud at him.  The parrot puts his claw out to grab him and Boych puts his face next to the cage to grab the claw......and the bird, he knows what to do next..............He bites Boych on his flubber lips.  This makes Boych irate and he starts barking and growling at the bird and the bird sticks his beak through the bars to bite him every time.  When things get really ferocious, from up on a perch, in the cage next to Zephyr; you hear "Quiet" whispered.  It is "Mariah"  Zeph's sister who is tired of their noise.  The amazing thing is I have seen them stop the ruckus when she says it.

When Zephyr wants to antagonize Boych he throws out some of his pellets and they clink on the floor. Boych hears it and comes over to eat them.  That bird knows he will be close enough to reach through the bars and grab his soft fleshy ears.  He pinches really hard with his claws then we have a war! Initiated by a bird!

The third day, when we had just about all the testing we could take, there was something happen which made the work worth while, which gave us a reason to try and socialize her.  Boych got her to play wrestle.  For 3 hours they played till they couldn't move and then dropped and slept for 30 minutes and it started all over again.

The only problem with play wrestle is, it is two dogs that are very large. They are playing like puppies do, rolling and crashing over each other.  Biting and fighting but not with the idea to hurt each other.  Doing it for the pure joy of finding a friend he can do dog stuff with.  They charge out the door in  unison, seeing who can run the fastest.

We still are having trouble with the food aggression from her.  If I give them knuckle bones to chew, they have to be locked in separate rooms.  Two reasons for this, her aggression and his idea is I don't want you to have a bone, they are both mine!  When we feed the raccoons on the porch she thinks that it is her food that is going out to them and she attacks Boych when he comes to look.  When I am cooking she doesn't want Boych to come near me.  She thinks I am cooking for her.

Because of Boych's manners and listening to NO as soon as I say it, we can feed them in the same area. (If I leave the area, the first thing she does is try to steal his food even when she still has food in her bowl.)

She is still trying to assert herself as alpha dog, and Boych is letting her think she is till she gets overpowering and he puts his foot down.  They are doing fine together usually.  We are trying to give him tons of love to let him know he is not replaced.  Which is very hard because she is very hyper and any time we have down time and are petting him, even if she is being petted by someone else, she has to leave that person to be petted by the same person Boych is being petted by.

Our main problem with her right now is she can't be trusted.  She knows the rules and when your back is turned she goes, and on purpose, does the thing she knows is no.

Example:  She "counter surfs".   A term coined by one of the readers of this blog.  When she is on her hind legs her nose is almost 7 feet in the air if she stretches.   But those long front legs can reach to all corners of the counters.  There is no more leaving the butter dish out, or even the sugar bowl.  My salt cellar next to the stove is now put away.

The worst part is, she doesn't even have to surf from her hind legs.  She can walk up to the edge of the counter and put her chin on it.  The second day she was here I was making hamburger patties and realized I hadn't gotten out the soy sauce from the fridge.  It is only 10 feet from the stove.  Less than ten seconds my back was turned.  When I turned around I had no hamburger patties.  She had consumed 3/4 of a pound in 5 seconds.  This was a dog which I had been struggling to get to eat her dog food at a faster pace than one piece at a time....She normally chews it 25 times before she swallows it!

When we go out of the kitchen she sneaks back in and does her thing, surfing on the counter.
If she hadn't become such great play friends with Boych she would have been out of here long ago.  In fifty years of dogs, we have never had a dog who had food aggression or one that I couldn't leave stuff alone on the counter.  (She will even get up and reach into the kitchen sink and pull out a dish)

I keep having to remind myself this dog is only just a year old, according to the vet.  (I think she may be younger than that).  Also Boych is now only maybe 14 months old.  They are both still puppies.  They are still growing.  They do puppy things.  .........But they are 80 pounds and she is now more than the 60 lbs she was when she came to us....

When they fight, play or other wise, it is a massive amount of weight when they run into you.  Oh that reminds me, they were playing rough and ran into me.  I got bit.  Not by Boych but by her.  She doesn't know the difference between human and dog flesh.  Boych, the minute his mouth touches you, he stops biting.  Her, she bites down hard when she comes in contact with flesh.

I am wondering how many children have been hurt by dogs who were not intending to hurt them.  Shayna had no idea she was hurting me.  She thought I was part of the game.  I know now we will have to watch her with children.  Boych, who is the one everyone would warn you about would never bite a person even in the throes of play.

We still have a long way to go, but the good sides of Shayna is outweighing her bad points.  We need to find the keys which unlock things in her mind.  Right now the pluses are:  When we leave she isn't aggressive with Boych.  She lays down and goes to sleep, and so does he.  I thinks she is on her way to being totally potty trust worthy.  She is listening when we talk with her.

As Shaggy as this dog story is, you can't believe all I left out.  Thank you for bearing with me.  Our next thing with her is Spaying.  For right now we are going to start training with the lead, and learning simple commands.  (She has learned sit but won't stay...she can't keep still any length of time.)

Meantime our Pit bull has shown what a prince he is and how lucky we are to have him.
I thought Great Pyrenees were calm laid back dogs.
Someone forgot to tell Shayna she is supposed to be the motherly type.

Our diamond is still being polished...LOL

A PITBULL'S NEW FRIEND

before bath
We would like to introduce "Shayna".  Hopefully she will become a member of our household.  Right now it is a get in your own corner situation.  Boychik adored her until she came in "his" house.

I gave them each their own raw hide bone.  He didn't want her to have any.  She  decided to steal his knucklebone.  You can't believe the hurt expression on his face when she sniffed at his babies' bodies (stuffed animals he has de-stuffed).  He was very protective of them.

Then there are "his" Parrots.  We have two African gray parrots; Zephyr and Mariah.  Zephyr and he developed quite a relationship.    In the mornings Boychik approaches the cage and lays on the floor with his nose next to the cage bars.  Zephyr slides down the bars and when he gets to the bottom he sticks his beak on his nose and whines...just like a dog.  Boychik gives a low throated ruff and the bird says, "Puppy dog"  and then he goes and gets his ball to throw at Boychik.  Boychik  ruffs and whines at him and the bird keeps banging the ball against the cage.  When Shayna approached the cage Boycik ran and put himself between her and the birds and when she tried to approach he growled at her.

She looks to be a Great Pyrenees and Golden Retriever.  Her body looks like an Afghan hound but that could be because she is underweight (at least to me she looks underweight).  She was born with almost no tail and what she has, has a crook in it like a "C" hook.  Her face looks retriever, but also looks like the Pyrenees.  She's tall enough to rest her head on a 32" high counter.

We are having moments where she says leave me alone to Boychik.  We haven't got her to go outside yet.  She hates being on a lead.  She is extremely stubborn.  She seems to not understand what to do.  She is not eating properly.  (She did work on the raw hide bone though.)  We were wondering if she might be deaf.  I have tried hand signals with her and she isn't aware I am communicating with her.  She acts stunned, is the only way I can describe it, until Boychik tries to interjects his likes and dislikes, then she gets stiff and growls.  There is no hair raised and no warning, She goes from angel to devil in a Nano second.

She had been here about 2 hours when we decided we couldn't take her smell any longer.  The vet had covered her with Adams Flea/Tick spray.  She has ticks real bad.  Especially seed ticks on all four of her legs.  I decided to give her a bath in Boychik's swimming pool. He couldn't stand she was in it.  We had to put him in the house.  This is Boychik in his pool:

I figured I could also use a rag and dislodge the bloated seed ticks.  It worked, the bottom of the pool was covered in teensy bloated bodies!  It was only a 1/2 bath, I didn't want to frighten her by keeping her in the pool to long.  I used aveeno baby wash and it didn't really touch the oils in the spray but it did rinse off some of the odor.   She still smells but it isn't as strong and we can pet her without our hands getting inundated with it. She was getting antsy in the pool and I knew it was get her out time.  Drying her with all that hair was a chore.
Shaineh after bath

When we came in, the remaining baby ticks started falling off all over the house.  I had to get out the vacuum and do everywhere she had been.  Then wonders of wonders, she isn't afraid of it.  I vacuumed her legs and I think she is now free and clear of the creatures.  In the morning we will do another round with the vacuum.

I have been keeping the lead close in case I need to restrain her from infringing on Boychik's territory.

How did "Shayna" come about?  Sunday morning at 9:30 our vet  called and said he had a long hair dog for us.  I had been thinking about another dog and had voiced that to the vet.  I had told him I really missed having a long haired dog.

We went to see her and we came home with her.
She is more than a diamond in the rough but we haven't found the way to brighten this jewel.
She had no name, we named her "Shayna" it means Pretty in Yiddish.
